Getting College-Ready in 9th Grade
Freshman year isn't about positioning yourself for college applications—it's about adjusting to high school, understanding what's required, and exploring what genuinely interests you. Get this year right, and the rest becomes much easier.
Main Focus
Build the Foundation Without the Pressure
Freshman year isn't about positioning yourself for college applications—it's about adjusting to high school, understanding what's required, and exploring what genuinely interests you. Get this year right, and the rest becomes much easier.
PrioritIES
Settle Into the High School Routine
Develop consistent study habits and time management systems
Learn how to balance coursework, activities, and downtime
Understand your teachers' expectations and how to ask for help
Get comfortable with the increased workload and independence
This is the year to make mistakes and adjust without high stakes. Struggling with organization? Now's the time to build better systems. Finding certain subjects harder than expected? Figure out if you need different study strategies or additional support.
Understand Graduation Requirements
Review your high school's graduation requirements (credits, specific courses, etc.)
Understand the difference between minimum requirements and college-prep coursework
Plan a four-year course sequence that keeps doors open (especially in math and science)
Identify if you're on track for honors, AP, or IB pathways
You don't need to map out every class for the next four years, but you should understand what choices you're making now and how they impact future options.
Nurture Interests In and Out of School
Try different clubs, activities, or sports to see what resonates
Pursue hobbies and interests outside of school-sanctioned activities
Don't overcommit—depth matters more than breadth
Quit things that aren't working (it's okay)
Freshman year is your permission to experiment. Join the robotics club. Try out for a sport. Start drawing. Volunteer somewhere.
